We Are Chester’s Deputy Editor James Wright got to have a taste of the highlife recently when he was invited to a VIP event at ABode in Chester in celebration of their Brasserie grand opening.

Be warned, it’s a messy one!

I think We Are Chester have made the big time, friends.

How often, if at all, does somebody get invited to a VIP event?

I can count the number of times I’ve even known about such an event, let alone been to one, on one hand.

So, to get the chance to attend such an event, well, I’d be mad not to, wouldn’t I?

Now, I must admit, I’ve never really been the sort of clientele that would frequent a place like ABode. My usual watering holes are a lot more sedated and even rundown than what I was met with upon arriving at Chester’s ABode.

The hotel-cum-restaurant-cum-offices-cum-gymnasium has been, quite literally, the first thing many people will see upon entering our fair city (presuming they approach from the Lache/Wrexham Road direction). The building stands tall above the Racecourse, and with the Crown Court behind it, there’s an air of majesty and prestige that comes along with the venue.

Even riffraff like me can be somebody for one night.

Myself and my usual partner in crime were welcomed into the venue and, at precisely 7 o’clock pm, were whisked up in the elevator to the top-floor, where the stage for a high-class party was set up.

The views were spectacular. If you’ve wondered how beautiful the Racecourse side of Chester can be, you need to take a trip upstairs. We could see for miles and miles, and, had it not been for the trees, we’d have probably have been able to see as far as the Welsh Border.

Okay, maybe not that far, but I was left gob-smacked by the views, even with the post-drive time traffic doddling along beneath us.

The staff were as friendly as they were attentive, with one of our waitress friends bringing over refill cocktails the second we finished a round – looking back, it’s no wonder we got as drunk as we did.

There were waiters and waitresses waiting to greet you with beer or wine or champagne or, my oh my, cocktails galore. Plus the sporadic samples of canapes, with some truly to die for food – seriously, if you ever want the perfect beef bourguignon, look no further!

And, everything was complimentary for the VIP guests. Well, why wouldn’t we sample the delights?

My partner and I only stayed in ABode’s Brasserie for two hours, but within that time, we had drunk an estimated 25 cocktails of varying mixes – which made for one messy night for myself, let me tell you!

I don’t really know what to do within that environment. I could tell there were the Cestrian elite and bourgeoisie and pseudo-royalty aplenty all mingling and chatting above the city’s skyline, and, in my best Primark shirt, I was well-and-truly out of my comfort zone. Maybe that’s why everyone seemed to look at us with bewildered faces when we took to the dancefloor.

From looking through the menu, the food doesn’t even seem to be that expensive for this time of restaurant, which is always a plus. Will definitely be bringing my better half back here again!

From the moment we walked into the front doors, to the second we pushed the call elevator button, we were treated like the king and queen of Chester.

Thank you to every one of the staff members, and the manager of ABode Brasserie for putting on such an event, and for inviting us along. Here’s hoping the restaurant is as successful as possible because you were all diamonds!

Now though, I’m tucking into my bowl of Honey Cheerios with Almond Milk. Ahh, how the other half lives.

Here’s to the next one!
