Review: Mecca Bingo, Chester

Was it eyes down for a full house or unlucky for some when We Are Chester’s Tori Erskine and friends were invited to take part in a spot of festive bingo? Over to Tori to find out more about this night out with a difference. Words and photos: Tori Erskine

Christmas Party season has finally arrived! And, of course, with it brings the mad rush of catching up with all your friends and family over the festivities. This week, We Are Chester was invited along for a spot of bingo, over at Mecca in Chester.

In all honesty, going along for a night of bingo has never crossed my mind for a Christmas get together, but with food and a bar available, along with the chance to win some money, what else do you need?

This Christmas, Mecca Bingo have some exciting festive packages available, including the Mecca Bingo Christmas Box for £20, which includes a number of vouchers, from a £10 bingo voucher to one of Mecca’s delicious in-club main meals.

You can’t forget the Christmas Party Package either. From £16 per person for a minimum party of six, guests at Mecca clubs can enjoy an evening of bingo games, and a choice of a two course meal or party platter. Not forgetting the additional drinks packages, which can be added from £10.

Accommodating team

First of all, the Chester team really need to be commended for being so accommodating with numbers. It’s hard enough to arrange a group of people for a night out at any time of the year, let alone Christmas! Combined with the Winter lurgy, my party size changed. Although, as with any booking, you should have your final numbers confirmed in advance.

There were seven of us in total, so we shared a few party platters. There was plenty of food for everyone, and was a good quick bite to eat before the games began!

Our platters included chicken bites and onion rings, so it was the perfect party food for the evening. There’s also the bar that supplies a variety of soft drinks and alcohol. I was designated driver for the evening so there was plenty of selection for myself, and those who were “out out” for the night.

Fast-paced game

If you’ve never been to bingo before I need to pre-warn you, you will need some top quality concentration skills if you’re going for the classic book and dabber pen. The numbers do flash up on a screen, but they were called very quickly so sometimes we found it difficult to keep up! I’ve been once before, so I’m definitely by no means a seasoned player, but by the fourth or fifth game I was getting more into the swing of things.

There were extra games on the night that were an additional cost, but if you’re just there for the main game, you may find yourself waiting in between. But it does mean that you won’t be rushing in between games for grabbing some food or drinks.

Christmas party ideas

Sadly, our luck wasn’t for us that night so none of us won, well it’s the taking part that counts after all isn’t it? But we all agreed it was a great way for us all to meet up and enjoy some food and drinks together. It’s definitely something I’ll be pitching for Christmas party ideas 2019.
