Food review: Afternoon tea at WOOD Chester

Words and photos: Paul Crofts

Afternoon tea has long been a British favourite. With lots of choice on offer in Chester, We Are Chester writer Paul Crofts went along to Hotel Indigo’s WOOD Chester restaurant to sample their take on this quintessentially English classic.

If you’re looking for a much needed Christmas treat for yourself after battling through the hoards of Christmas shoppers or looking for an indulgent foodie gift for a loved one then WOOD Chester, the brainchild of 2015 Masterchef winner, chef Simon Wood is a quiet haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Situated just a stone’s throw from Grosvenor Park and next to the beautiful, Gothic inspired St Werburgh’s Church, WOOD Chester offers a contemporary, industrial chic dining space for lunch, dinner and afternoon tea, at the front of Chester’s newest hotel.

With the menu looking all so inviting, it would be hard to know what to choose so it was lovely to be able to sample elements from each of the afternoon tea offerings. First up, the Traditional Afternoon Tea which featured a classic selection of sandwiches, scrumptious cakes, homemade scones and a pot of tea of coffee.

If something more substantial is your thing then go with the Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea which features mini fish and chips, handmade pork pies, scotch eggs and roast chicken and draught beer.

Classic cream tea

Wood also offer a classic Cream Tea which features homemade scones and a pot of tea or coffee. The Traditional Afternoon Tea can be made really special by adding either a gin and tonic or if you’re really pushing the boat out, a glass of champagne and fresh strawberries, perfect for that birthday or anniversary celebration. With Christmas just around the corner, there has never been a better time for a bit of indulgence!
